Dot Peen Pin Marking Trailer Frames – Case Study

In Spartanburg County, South Carolina, the National Insurance Crime Bureau (NICB) partnered with local law enforcement to combat trailer theft. Permanent identification marks can deter theft of trailers and improve recovery rates, and they were looking for a permanent marking solution that could efficiently mark trailers with permanent VIN-style marks.

Marking Application: Marking Trailer Frames

The National Insurance Crime Bureau (NICB) was developing a new crime prevention program in Spartanburg County, South Carolina where trailer theft is a major problem. Trailers are not legally required to be registered in South Carolina and without license plates, there is no consistent form of identification, making them more likely to be stolen and difficult to track and recover once stolen.

The NICB wanted to equip the Spartanburg County Sheriff’s Office with a handheld marking device to mark trailer frames and other equipment with a VIN-like number to aid in stolen trailer recovery and deter theft altogether.

Part Material

Trailer frames are typically made of steel and aluminum.

Application Requirements

This application had three requirements:

  • The marking machine needed to be handheld.
  • The marking machine had to be capable of marking metal, specifically steel and aluminum.
  • The machine needed a marking field wide enough to fit 12 characters in a single line.

Trailer Frame Marking solution

To meet these requirements, Schmidt Marking Systems recommended a handheld pin marking solution capable of producing deep, permanent marks on metal, and can be brought out into the field. The Styliner® Super Stinger® met all the application requirements.

  • Permanent, tamper-resistant marks
  • Portable for field use
  • Works on mixed materials (steel/aluminum frames)
  • Fast enough for large-scale enforcement programs

Portable pin marking systems allow law enforcement and municipalities to create permanent, tamper-resistant identification on unregistered trailers, improving traceability and deterring theft. The Super Stinger makes clean, deep, permanent marks in most metals and at around five pounds and with a communication cable of 20 feet, it's portable and easy-to-hold during the marking process. The solution enabled law enforcement to establish a consistent, repeatable method for marking trailers across the county, improving traceability and supporting theft deterrence efforts.
